How Nex Lab Flow Zone came to be

Dr. Marcus Hale opened Nex Lab Flow Zone in the spring of 2019, after spending the better part of a decade watching smaller research groups struggle to access reliable flow cytometry. At the Whitmore Institute, where he worked as a senior analyst, the core facility was perpetually overbooked. Teams would wait six weeks for a slot, then receive data with no gating notes and no one to call with questions. He left in January 2019 with a clear idea: a lab small enough to be responsive, rigorous enough to produce data you could publish.

The first year was mostly immunophenotyping work for two university groups and a biotech startup based nearby. The startup, working on a T-cell exhaustion model, needed weekly runs with consistent gating across timepoints. That project, which ran from March 2019 to November 2020, shaped how the lab handles longitudinal studies today. Every gating template is saved, versioned, and reapplied to subsequent runs so that timepoint-to-timepoint variation comes from the biology, not the analyst. It was a lesson learned partly through one early mistake: a gating drift in month four that required three samples to be re-run. Dr. Marcus Hale still keeps the corrected report on the office wall as a reminder.

Dr. Marcus Hale spent eight years as a senior flow cytometry analyst at the Whitmore Institute of Biomedical Research before founding Nex Lab Flow Zone in 2019. He trained under Dr. Marcus Hale, whose meticulous approach to panel design and gating strategy still shapes how the lab runs today. Before that, he spent two years calibrating microfluidic systems for a contract research organisation in Cambridge, which is where he first noticed how many smaller research teams were being priced out of reliable flow analysis. He opened Nex Lab Flow Zone specifically to close that gap. Outside the lab, he keeps a small vegetable plot and plays chess on Tuesday evenings with a group that has met in the same room since 2011.
